Abstract: »A key concern in the 1997 Rape in Antiquity was over when to use the term ‘rape’ for a particular sexual encounter – or impending sexual encounter – or indeed how far a long-term union, a marriage for instance, can be defined in terms of rape. Such a concern over what to do with evidence that might fi t the landscape of rape but which needs investigating in relation to a range of cultural, religious and other contexts is the subject of the next essay, Marco Serino’s ‘“Simulated” pursuit scenes on red-fi gure pottery: An iconographic recontextualization’. This study addresses a category of evidence, pursuit scenes, that in Rape in Antiquity and elsewhere are explored in relation to a consent–coercion binary but which, Serino shows, need to be read in relation to the methodology developed by Christiane Sourvinou-Inwood (e.g. Sourvinou-Inwood 1987 ) for whom any conclusions concerning a particular body of evidence should grow out of a thorough reading of the evidence in relation to what can be known concerning local cultural and other contexts. By applying Sourvinou-Inwood’s methodology to a set of pursuit scenes from Himera in Sicily, the conclusion Serino reaches – that the violence being depicted is ‘simulated’ violence that makes sense in relation to the integration of young women into the civic community via marriage – bears out the conviction felt by myself and Karen Pierce in the 1997 volume that evidence for sexual violence and rape ‘off ers scope for refinement of our understanding of ancient perceptions [and] attitudes’, but not necessarily of the third term in that sentence, namely ‘experiences’ ( Deacy and Pierce 1997b : vii).« (Source: Deacy, Susan. »Introduction: 'Twenty Years Ago': Revisiting Rape in Antiquity.« Revisiting Rape in Antiquity: Sexualised Violence in Greek and Roman Worlds.
